Generals in God's Army

The list below includes the names of some of the most godly and influential Christian leaders, ministers, and missionaries of the modern age. We would do well to heed their words and follow their examples. "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ."   1 Corinthians 11:1

Editor's Note:   Though I've been careful about the selection of names on this list, I know full well that not everyone agrees completely with the writings and teachings of every name listed.

In fact, with careful study, you will find that most of the men and women listed below have been labeled before as either a rebel, fanatic, mystic, or even a heretic somewhere along the line, usually from within the Church itself.

However, genuinely believe that they have given much to the advancement of the Kingdom of God, and should that same quality of holiness and zeal live in us today, we would certainly see the world turned upside down again.

  •   Augustine, St. (354-430).   Wrote the classic, "The Confessions of Saint Augustine."
  •   Aquinas, Thomas (1224-1274).   Wrote the masterwork, "Summa Theologica."
  •   Aylward, Gladys (1902-1970).   The Little Woman, missionary to China
  •   Barnhouse, Donald (1895-1960).   American preacher with an unyielding faith and devotion.
  •   Bartleman, Frank (1871-1935).   Reported on the great Azusa Street revival.
  •   Baxter, Richard (1615-1691).   Puritan pastor of the 17th century
  •   Bliss, Philip P. (1838-1876).   American hymn writer and Gospel singer.
  •   Boehme, Jacob (1575-1624).   Wesley required all of his preachers to study the writings of Jacob Boehme.
  •   Bonar, Andrew (1810-1892).   Biographer of Robert Murray M'Cheyne and energetic preacher.
  •   Bonar, Horatius (1808-1889).   Ministered in Scotland, and wrote many excellent hymns.
  •   Bonhoeffer, Dietrich (1906-1945).   Martyred German theologian, wrote "The Cost of Discipleship."
  •   Booth, Catherine (1829-1890).   Wife of General William Booth
  •   Booth, William (1829-1912).   Founder of the Salvation Army
  •   Boston, Thomas (1676-1732).   Famous for his work "Crook in the Lot"
  •   Bounds, Edward M. (1835-1913).   An extensive writer on the subject of prayer
  •   Brainerd, David (1718-1747).   Missionary to American Indians.
  •   Brengle, Samuel (1860-1936).   A mighty general in the Salvation Army.
  •   Bunyan, John (1628-1688).   English preacher and writer.
  •   Burns, William (1815-1868).   Scotlands missionary to China, worked with Hudson Taylor.
  •   Candlish, Robert Smith (1806-1873).   One of Scotlands most brilliant preachers.
  •   Carey, William (1761-1834).   English missionary to India.
  •   Carmichael, Amy (1867-1951).   Missionary to Dohnavur, India
  •   Cartwright, Peter (1785-1872).   The unshakable circuit rider preacher.
  •   Chalmers, James (1841-1901).   Scottish missionary-explorer to the South Pacific Islands.
  •   Chalmers, Thomas (1780-1847).   A giant in his day, yet retaining great humility and love.
  •   Chambers, Oswald (1874-1917).

  •   Chapman, J. Wilbur (1859-1918).   American evangelist, revivalist and pastor.
  •   Charnock, Stephen (1628-1680).   Presbyterian preacher, wrote "The Existence and Attributes of God."
  •   Cromwell, Oliver (1599-1658).   Strong Puritan religious principles.
  •   Crosby, Fanny (1820-1915).   American hymn writer and poetess.
  •   Dickerson, David (1583-1662).   The great "Apostle of the Covenant."
  •   Edersheim, Alfred (1825-1889).   Wrote "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah"
  •   Edwards, Jonathan (1703-1758).   An old fashioned fire and brimstone preacher
  •   Elliot, Jim (1927-1956).   Martyred missionary to Ecuador
  •   Erskine, Ebenezer (1680-1754).   Founder of the Secession Church in Scotland.
  •   Evans, Christmas (1766-1838).   Welsh preacher.
  •   Farel, William (1489-1565).   Fiery Evangelist of the Reformation.
  •   Finney, Charles Grandison (1792-1875).   Wrote the classic, "Systematic Theology."
  •   Flavel, John (1630-1691).   The English minister of Dartmouth and writer of many practical treatises.
  •   Fox, George (1624-1691).   The founder of the Quaker movement
  •   Foxe, John (1517-1587).   Wrote Foxe's Book of Martyrs
  •   Frodsham, Stanley (1882-1969).   Great spiritual leader who wrote the classic, "With Signs Following."
  •   Geddie, John (1815-1872).   Canadian missionary to the New Hebrides.
  •   Gill, John (1697-1771).   The great Baptist preacher who wrote, "A Body of Doctrinal Divinity."
  •   Gillespie, George (1613-1646).   Champion of evangelical Christian theology.
  •   Gilmour, James (1843-1891).   Pioneer Scottish missionary to Mongolia.
  •   Goforth, Jonathan (1859-1936).   Canadian missionary to China.
  •   Goodwin, Thomas (1600-1680).   One of the most important and precise Puritan theologians.
  •   Gray, Andrew (1634-1656).   Ministered in the glorious era of the Puritans.
  •   Gray (Perth), Andrew (1805-1861).   Worked on abolishing patronage in the Church of Scotland.
  •   Gurnall, William (1617 -1679).   Wrote the classic, "The Christian in Complete Armour."
  •   Guthrie, Thomas (1803-1873).   Scotland's most popular preacher.
  •   Guthrie, William (1620-1665).   Wrote "Christian's Great Interest" which John Owen carried always.
  •   Havergal, Frances R. (1836-1879).   English poet and hymn writer.
  •   Henry, Matthew (1662-1714).   English minister and Bible commentator.
  •   Hodge, A. A. (1823-1886).   American Presbyterian leader, son of Charles Hodge.
  •   Hodge, Charles (1797-1878).   One of the greatest of American theologians
  •   Hus, John (1373-1475).   The anti-baptist who was martyred for his faith.
  •   Hyde, John (1865-1912).   The great man of Prayer.
  •   Ironside, Harry A. (1876-1951).   American Bible teacher, pastor, and author.
  •   Jones, Griffith (1683-1761).   The "morning star" of the Wales revival.
  •   Jones, Samuel Porter (1847-1906).   American Methodist Evangelist.
  •   Judson, Adoniram (1788-1850).   American missionary to Burma.
  •   Judson, Ann H. (1789-1826).   First Lady of American foreign missions.
  •   Kempis, Thomas à (1380-1471).   Author of "The Imitation of Christ"
  •   Kierkegaard, Soren (1813-1855).   Christian hymn writer and poet.
  •   Knapp, Martin (1853-1901).   Methodist minister from Michigan
  •   Knox, John (1505-1572).   Almost single-handedly rescued Scotland from Popery.
  •   Kulp, George (1845-1939).   A firery, no-nonsense evangelist preacher.
  •   Lake, John G. (1870-1935).   Methodist minister and Missionary to South Africa.
  •   Law, William (1689-1761).   Wrote "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life"
  •   Lawrence, Brother (1605-1691).   Wrote the classic "The Practice of the Presence of God"
  •   Lewis, Jessie Penn (1861-1927).   Reported on the great Welsh revival.
  •   Liddell, Eric (1902-1945).   "It's complete surrender"
  •   Lightfoot, John (1602-1675).   Famous as a scholar of ancient Jewish customs, language and literature.
  •   Livingstone, David (1813-1873).   Scottish missionary and explorer to Africa.
  •   Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn (1899-1981).   Westminster Chapel, London
  •   Love, Christopher (1618-1651).   Man with strong Puritan leanings.
  •   Luther, Martin (1483-1546).   "The Just Shall Live By Faith."
  •   McCheyne, Robert Murray (1813-1843).   Scottish preacher, became famous by his saintly and pious life.
  •   Mackay, Alexander (1849-1890).   Pioneer Scottish missionary to Uganda, Africa.
  •   Mackintosh, Charles H. (1820-1896).   Irish preacher, Bible expositor, and author.
  •   MacLaren, Alexander (1826-1910).   "The prince of expository preachers."
  •   Manton, Thomas (1620-1677).   A chief among theologians.
  •   Marsden, Samuel (1764-1838).   English missionary to New South Wales and New Zealand.
  •   Mather, Cotton (1663-1728).   The most celebrated of all New England Puritans.

  •   Roberts, Evan (1878-1950).   Leader of the greatest known revival in church history.

  •   Rutherford, Samuel (1600-1661).   Best-known for his pastorship at Anwoth and his "Letters"
  •   Ryle, J. C. (1816-1900).   Champion and exponent of the evangelical and reformed faith.
  •   Sankey, Ira D. (1840-1908).   American Gospel singer and composer.
  •   Scofield, C. I. (1843-1921).   A well-known dispensationalist
  •   Seymour, William (1870-1922).   Leader of the Azusa Street Revival.
  •   Shedd, William T. G. (1820-1894).   Deep writer of Biblical theology.
  •   Shelhamer, Elmer Ellsworth (1869-1940).   Evangelist with the Free Methodists

  •   Slessor, Mary (1848-1915).   Scottish missionary to Africa.
  •   Smith, Gipsy (1860-1947).   English evangelist.
  •   Sparks, T. Austin (1888-1971).   Knew God as few men have ever known Him.

  •   Toplady, Augustus (1740-1778).   Great preacher and poet of his day.
  •   Torrey, Reuben A. (1856-1928).   American evangelist, pastor, and author.
  •   Tozer, A. W. (1897-1963).   Earn the reputation of a "20th-century prophet."
  •   Traill, Robert (1642-1716).   Famous for his devoted, risky attendance on the martyr James Guthrie.
  •   Tyndale, William (1494-1536).   English translator of the Bible and Reformer.
  •   Walsh, Thomas (1730-1759).   The great Methodist Circuit rider.
  •   Warfield, B. B. (1851-1921).   Deeply religious spirit who wrote volumes on Theology.
  •   Watson, Thomas (1620-1686).   One of the most famous Puritan preachers.
  •   Watts, Isaac (1674-1748).   English preacher, poet, and hymn writer.
  •   Wesley, Charles (1707-1788).   English hymn writer, poet, and preacher.
  •   Wesley, John (1703-1791).   Founder of the Methodist Church
  •   Wesley, Susanna (1669-1742).   Mother of the Methodist church.
  •   Whyte, Alexander (1836-1921).   Scottish Presbyterian.
  •   Whitefield, George (1714-1770).   A leading figure of the Great Awakening
  •   Whittle, Daniel W. (1840-1901).   American evangelist.
  •   Wigglesworth, Smith (1859-1947).   The great man of Faith.
  •   Winslow, Octavius (1808-1878).   Promoted an experimental knowledge of God.
  •   Wycliffe, John (1320-1384).   English preacher, writer and Bible translator.

And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of all God's Generals. (Hebrews 11:32) As Charles Spurgeon said, "There were giants in the land in those days."
